For the month of May, we’ll be splitting our donation between Save the Bay and Althea’s school, Peralta Elementary in Oakland. From what I gather, parent involvement has been a key factor in transforming this school, which was considered “underperforming” 15 years ago and is now ranked in the highest 10% of elementary schools, not only in Oakland Unified but statewide. Parents’ efforts to improve the school took the usual forms–fundraising, direct involvement in classrooms, the school garden… But they also went wider and deeper, to build a real community of families and neighbors to support the school. It worked–I’ve felt part of the Peralta community since we moved here, before we were parents ourselves, and the school has shown improvement in all of the various (and overly plentiful) scales and measures and matrices used these days to assess and rank school performance. Plants thrive in fertile soil, after all.
The Peralta Fund pays for the many “extras” that have also contributed to the school’s success–things like art and music classes, field trips, extra staff to lower ratios in classrooms in the lower grades. As you know, the customer decides how much to pay for a Litter Critter, and we take 25% off the top of the purchase price and donate it to Save the Bay (and, on occasion, other worthy causes). For the month of May, 2015, the Peralta Fund will benefit as well.
So please come in and take a look! And if you are a Peralta supporter, please share and widely distribute our link (www.littercritters.us).
